Traditional sauna vs infrared: what's actually in our Fire & Ice room

Most Auckland studios that offer heat therapy run infrared cabins. Our Fire & Ice sauna doesn't — it's genuine 80-90°C dry heat, and the difference between the two is bigger than most people realise.

Ask around Auckland's growing list of sauna and cold-plunge studios and you'll notice a pattern: most of them run infrared cabins. Ours doesn't. The Fire & Ice sauna in our Grafton studio is a traditional dry-heat room, built to run at 80-90°C — the same style of heat Finns have been sweating in for generations. Neither approach is wrong. But they are genuinely different experiences, doing different things to your body, and the marketing rarely explains why.

Two ways to heat a body

A traditional sauna heats the room. Hot rocks or an electric heater warm the air to somewhere between 80°C and 90°C, and your body takes on that heat mostly through the air around you. It's blunt, immediate, and properly hot — you feel it the moment you walk in.

An infrared cabin skips the air almost entirely. Infrared panels emit radiant heat that penetrates the skin directly, which is why the room itself can stay far cooler — most cabins run at noticeably lower air temperatures, roughly 45-60°C — while your body still warms up and sweats. It's a gentler entry point, and a real reason some people who find 80-90°C intolerable can sit through a 40-minute infrared session with no trouble at all.

There's also a texture to traditional heat that infrared can't reproduce: löyly, the Finnish word for the wave of humidity that rises when water hits hot rocks. It's not just tradition for its own sake — a splash of water briefly spikes the humidity, and that damp heat feels noticeably more intense on the skin than the same air temperature dry. Infrared panels have nothing to throw water on. The heat stays flat and dry the entire session, which is part of why it's gentler, and part of why some people find it a little less satisfying.

What the difference actually does

Both raise your core temperature, lift your heart rate and open your blood vessels — the basic mechanics behind why heat therapy feels good are shared between the two. Where they part ways is intensity and time. Traditional heat works fast: ten to fifteen minutes at 80-90°C is enough to get you properly sweating and your muscles properly loose. Infrared works slowly: because the air stays cooler, most sessions run 30 to 45 minutes to reach a comparable sweat.

The research base is lopsided toward traditional heat, mostly because it has decades more of it behind it. The longest-running population studies on sauna use and long-term health come out of Finland, and they were tracking people using genuine high-heat, Finnish-style saunas — not infrared cabins, which are a newer category with a much smaller body of research behind them. That doesn't mean infrared doesn't work. It means the evidence for it is thinner, not that the effect is absent.

The heat doesn't care what generates it. Your tolerance for it does.

Why our room runs hot, not low

We built the Fire & Ice room around genuine dry heat because it matches what the rest of the session is doing. A 60-minute contrast session is built on a fast, clean swing between hot and cold — heat that opens your vessels hard, followed by a 4-5°C plunge that closes them just as hard. That swing is the point of contrast therapy, and it works best when the heat side does real work in ten to fifteen minutes, not gently over the better part of an hour. Infrared is a genuinely good way to warm up on its own terms. It's a slower tool for a faster job.

None of this is a dig at the studios running infrared cabins around Auckland — they're solving for comfort and accessibility, and for a lot of people that's the right trade. We're solving for a different session, and dry heat is the tool that fits it.

Which one should you choose

If you're short on time, want an intense hit and are pairing it with a cold plunge, traditional heat is the better match — it's exactly what our Fire & Ice room is built for. If 80-90°C sounds unbearable, you're managing an injury that needs a gentler approach, or you simply want a long, low, easy sweat with no cold at the end, an infrared session elsewhere is a reasonable choice, and there's no shame in preferring it. The best heat therapy is the one you'll actually turn up for every week — the same rule that governs floating, or anything else you're trying to make a habit.

Time of day matters too. Traditional heat at 80-90°C followed by a cold plunge tends to leave you alert — a lunchtime or after-work session, not a last-thing-before-bed one. A longer, lower infrared sweat with no cold finish sits more comfortably in an evening routine, closer to a wind-down than a reset. Neither is more correct. They're built for different parts of your week.

Questions we hear in the studio

Is infrared sauna as good as a traditional sauna?

For relaxation and a good sweat, yes — plenty of people get real benefit from it. For the intensity and speed our contrast sessions are built around, traditional dry heat does the job in a fraction of the time.

Why doesn't Float Culture use an infrared cabin?

Because our Fire & Ice room is built around a fast hot-cold swing, and genuine 80-90°C heat gets you there in ten to fifteen minutes. An infrared cabin would mean a much longer warm-up before the cold plunge could do its job.

Is 80-90°C safe?

For most healthy people, yes — it's the same range Finnish saunas have run at for generations. Start with a shorter sit if you're new to it, and check with your doctor first if you're pregnant or managing a heart condition.

Can I get a proper sweat without the heat feeling unbearable?

Yes. You don't need to sit through the full ten to fifteen minutes on your first visit — five minutes of real heat is still real heat, and our team can help you find a pace that works.

Does an infrared sauna burn more calories or detox better than a traditional sauna?

Be wary of anyone promising either. Both raise your heart rate and get you sweating, which people sometimes describe loosely as "detox" or a workout stand-in — neither is a substitute for exercise, and sweat itself isn't doing meaningful detoxification. Book heat therapy for how it makes you feel afterwards, not as a shortcut around the gym.
